Description: People in Nusantara probably do not know or misunderstand about Malay ethnic communities that inhabit the Patani region of southern Thailand. After many years, Malay descendant in Patani had formed co-prosperous Malay cultural community in this region by practicing Islamic civilization. Apart from it, there are local community who are Muslims and non-Muslims but do not speak in Malay within the region. The Malay language spoken by the Malays in Patani is called bhasa Yawi (ภาษายาว) in Thai. Generations under 40 years old who knows how to speak in Malay dialect are decreasing drastically because Thailand emphasizes the education’s system for all the nationals in Thai language and the locals speak standard Thai language fluently as their national language. The main purpose of this paper is to correct the vast misunderstandings of outside scholars about the use and education systems on Malay language in the Patani region. The final section of this paper will touch on the history of the establishment of Patani kingdom in 1457 until 1902 as a main key to understand the meaning of Malay term which is often raised by various parties in this Nusantara archipelago.
